Growing Your Vegetables in a 12 Inch Pot

A 12 inch pot is a great way to get started with container gardening. You will have plenty of room for your plants and they can spread out and enjoy the sunshine while you are working in the garden. A good pot will hold many seeds and some plants will need much more room than others. Before you purchase your first container garden plan, it is important to know what you are looking for.

There are many types of containers available on the market today, so do some research and find the right pot that fits your lifestyle. A 12-inch pot is a perfect size for starting new plantings and you will be able to find one that suits your needs. If you want an indoor garden then choose a pot that will fit nicely in a window or on a shelf. If you have a patio at home then a pot that fits on the ground in front of your house will work better.

When choosing your container garden plan select the appropriate potting medium. The best potting media is gravel because it retains water well and it is very affordable. Other mediums to consider are perlite, fiberglass and clay. If you are just getting started with container gardening then consider the cheapest potting medium first.

Make sure the container garden has good drainage by digging a hole in the center and filling with dirt. If the hole is in a nice spot then add some good soil and rake it into the hole. Once the soil is in place then add your plants and plant seedlings. You can use a simple method of watering by attaching a hose to the bottom of your container garden and water your plants from the top of the container.

One thing to remember when you are starting out is that it is always a good idea to start off with a small amount of soil and then once your plants grow you can up the amount of soil. It is always a good idea to put a plant into each pot that you are building. This will help reduce the amount of transplanting pots that you have to make. Just follow the directions for your container gardening. Some plant diseases can be treated with medication and you can easily save yourself some work by doing this.

Make sure the pots are wide enough for your plants but not too wide that the roots of the plants will be able to escape. When transplanting new plants into their containers make sure you space them so they are about one to two inches apart. If they are too close then the plant may get sun burned and this is not something that you want to happen. When putting a plant into its container, make sure there is at least two inches between the plant and the sides of the container. This will help keep the plant cool.

When the weather is warm and you are starting to plan your container garden, make sure you have a good location that gets at least six hours of sunlight. You do not want it to get too hot or it will affect the growth of the plants. One way to get it to be nice and cool is to build a window box on the side. This will give them the sunlight they need but still allow them to be in a shady spot during the summer. A plant stand that is placed in the sun works well also.

Most people think that pots should only be used once. This is not true. If you plant certain flowers and vegetables that usually bloom for two years in the same pot, you will have twice as much fresh produce from your plants. Make sure you water your plants thoroughly before you put them into the pot. Watering is very important when using plastic pots.
