How to Keep Rabbits Away From Your Flower Garden

How to keep rabbits away from your flower garden can be quite a challenge. Rabbits are a very smart and cunning animal, and they will do whatever they find to be appealing to them. Flowering plants are often very attractive to rabbits, which is one of the reasons that they love to eat these plants. Many times you will notice them hanging around the base of flower bushes, eating whatever they can find. If you have flowers in your flower garden that are close to the ground, this can cause a problem, because rabbits like to run up and down the plant stalks in search of berries, or whatever they can find.

The first thing you should do if you want to keep them out of your flower garden is, make sure that your garden is as rabbit-proof as possible. Keep any flower bushes and grass areas covered up. Rabbit droppings are acidic and can really damage your garden’s soil, so try to stay away from these areas. If you must plant in those areas, try to use plastic or wire fencing, so that your rabbit cannot get into the ground underneath the fence. Plastic will keep most of them out, but wire is better because it will not rot or deteriorate. Be sure to plant your grasses and bushes in the fall, so that they will be healthy in the spring.

There are also many chemicals that you can buy, to keep your garden rabbit-proof. While these may work for some people, rabbits can still find ways to access your garden, even if you use these chemicals. Try to use natural repellents instead of chemical repellents. These are safer for your garden’s environment, and you can also use these repellents near the flower beds, to keep rabbits away from the area.

Rabbits will also find your garden appealing to look at, if there are plenty of different kinds of flowers in it. While this may discourage a rabbit from finding your garden, there are other things that you can do to encourage rabbits to stay away from your garden. For example, keep the flower beds and shrubs properly trimmed and make sure that you water the areas well and keep them watered when the rabbits are present in them.

When choosing flowers for your flower garden, choose ones that will not attract rabbits. For example, tulips are unlikely to attract rabbits. On the other hand, you could place a garden of marigolds along the base of a tree and watch the rabbits find your tulips, and move on to greener pastures.

Keeping your garden free of weeds and other unwanted plants, is another way of preventing rabbits from getting in. A good way to do this is by removing any weeds from the area, before you plant anything else. You can pull out all the weeds, till the ground, and then plant your chosen flowers. It will take time, but the results will be worth it. Another thing to remember, is that most insects will be attracted to your flower garden, as they will find the smell of plants to be very pleasant. Keeping this in mind, when planting, make sure that you plant those flowers that are not very attracting to the insects.

How to keep rabbits away from your flower garden by using repellents. Some sprays and other products can repel rabbits quite effectively. Check with local stores for the availability of these products, and how to apply them, before you plant anything.

Finally, rabbits find the taste of plants unpleasant. If you do not wish for them to have access to your flower garden, making sure they cannot reach them is a simple matter of fencing in the plants. You can also consider sprinkling some food around the plants, which will repel most types of pests.
